WA Departmental Meeting Confirms Agenda

Summary —

Recognising the Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia (ITECA) as the peak representative body for independent Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), the Department of Training and Workforce Development in Western Australia meet with ITECA Western Australia.

Key Issues —

For independent RTOs in Western Australia there are three key issues that presently challenge them depending on their scope of operation and engagement with industry. ITECA Western Australia meets regularly with the Department of Training and Workforce Development to ensure that these issues were addressed.

The primary purpose of the meeting was to ensure that independent RTOs are positioned in a way that they can continue to be the mainstay of Western Australia’s vocational education and training system. The issues canvassed included those set out below.

Western Australia Departmental Discussions


 

◾ Whether Western Australia will offer the JobTrainer initiative
◾ Student work placement and their inability to complete qualifications
◾ Timeline for the return of international students in Western Australia

A briefing on these issues will be provided to ITECA Western Australia at meetings of the following groups.

Attending the meeting were the Department’s Director General (Anne Driscoll) plus other senior departmental staff. Independent RTOs were represented by the ITECA Western Australian Chair (Trish Ridley), the ITECA Chief Executive Officer (Troy Williams) and the ITECA Manager – State Government Policy (Les Wells). Given Covid-19 social distancing measures, it was held via videoconference.

The importance of this meeting is signified by the fact that independent RTOs in across Western Australia support 73% of students in vocational education and training and achieve outcomes such as course completion, post-study employment and student satisfaction commensurate, or better than, public TAFE colleges.

Getting Involved —

ITECA’s ability to play a lead role in matters associated with this issue rests on the advice and guidance of individuals serving on the ITECA Western Australian State Committee.  ITECA Membership – It's a great time to get involved.
