Summary —

As the Australian Government considers major reform to vocational education and training funding models, it’s important that decision-makers appreciate the outstanding contribution of independent Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). A new fact sheet from the Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia (ITECA) is a timely contribution to the debate.

Key Issues —

Vocational education and training delivers practical training to individuals to give them the skills for work. That’s what makes the views of employers so important.

The new fact sheet draws upon data from the National Centre for Vocational Education and Research (NCVER) to highlight the extraordinary levels of satisfaction that employers have with independent RTOs. This is reflected in the data below.

NCVER Data ―
Satisfaction With Private Providers

◾ Employer satisfaction with training ― 88%
◾ Employer satisfaction with relevance of skills taught ― 90%
◾ Employer satisfaction with the cost effectiveness of training ― 85%
◾ Employer satisfaction with the trainer's industry experience ― 90%
◾ Employer satisfaction with the condition of facilities ― 92%

This data showcasing employer satisfaction with independent RTOs can be viewed in a new information sheet available from the link below.

These outcomes are significant in a context where independent RTOs support around 80% of the 4.2 million students in vocational education and training.

“With strong links to local employers, an innovative approach to delivery and a reputation for delivering work-ready skills, independent RTOs offer courses that help employers access the skilled workforce they need,” said Troy Williams, ITECA Chief Executive.

The new information is helping drive the reform debate about giving students the right to select the RTO that is best able to help them achieve their life and career goals. This may be a quality independent RTO or a public TAFE college.
