The re-emergence of the Covid-19 virus in Victoria saw the reintroduction of radical social distancing measures which effectively shut-down on campus tertiary education in Victoria. With infection rates declining, the Victorian Government has set out the pathway for the return of students
Key Issues —
The Victorian Government has outlined a two-phased approach for the restriction of Covid19 social distancing measures, one for greater metropolitan Melbourne and the other for the regional Victoria.
The Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia (ITECA) has been in close contact with the Victorian Government as to what the practical outcome will be for independent higher education, vocational education, training and skills providers. An update will available at the next meeting of the ITECA Victorian Funded Provider Interest Group meeting to be held on 17 September 2020 via videoconference. This meeting is open to any employee of an ITECA member.
The initial advice is that for independent providers in greater metropolitan Melbourne, there will not be any significant relaxing of restrictions to allow for onsite hands-on skills-based learning, unless on the permitted worker list, until 26 October 2020; however, that is dependent upon a significant reduction in the number of cases.
In regional Victoria, from 14 September 2020 the advice for ‘Adult Education’ will be to learn from home “where you can” and ITECA Victoria is working to get a clearer definition of what this means in practice.
“We’re acutely aware of the challenges before independent providers, their students and staff in Victoria. The ITECA team is monitoring the situation and ensuring that the state government is attune to the concerns of our members,” said Troy Williams, ITECA Chief Executive.
Members of ITECA Victoria with questions as to the practical issues associated with the return of students are invited to forward them via email to firstname.lastname@example.org prior to 19 September 2020 so that answers can be presented to the meeting.
