WA Announces Relief For Businesses

Summary —

The West Australian Government has announced a $607 million stimulus package to support West Australian businesses and households through the COVID-19 time of uncertainty. 

Key Issues —

As providers across the higher education, vocational education, training and skills sectors are impacted by the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus and measures taken to contain its spread, the Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia (ITECA) has been a strong advocate for the West Australian Government to introduce measures to support not only the independent tertiary education sector, but also the businesses that employ its students.  In this context the assistance package below is welcome.

The West Australian stimulus package of $607 million will be focused on economic relief for businesses and households. 

Measures include a freeze on household fees and charges, including electricity, water, motor vehicle charges, emergency services levy and public transport fees.

For businesses, those impacted by COVID-19 can defer payroll tax payments until 21 July 2020, and small businesses that pay payroll tax will receive a one-off grant of $17,000. The $1 million payroll tax threshold was brought forward by six months to 1 July 2020.

These measures are in addition to the $760 million announced in the past few months to stimulate the economy.
