Industry Sector/s —
Vocational Education & Training, Higher Education, International Education

Summary —

The Australian Capital Territory Government has committed $137 million during its first economic stimulus phase to project jobs and support businesses through the impact of COVID-19.

Key Issues —

As providers across the higher education, vocational education, training and skills sectors are impacted by the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus and measures taken to contain its spread, the Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia (ITECA) has been a strong advocate for the Australian Capital Territory Government to introduce measures to support not only the independent tertiary education sector, but also the businesses that employ its students.  In this context the assistance package below is welcome.

Australian Capital Territory (ACT) stimulus measures include:

  • A freeze on a number of government fees and charges;
  • Rebate on commercial property rates;
  • Interest free deferrals of payroll tax commencing 1 July 2020 for businesses up to a payroll threshold of $10 million.
A number of support measures for household have also been announced. Additional measures to support the ACT economy will be announced in the coming weeks.
