Northern Territory Recovery Package

Date —

20 Mar 2020

Industry Sector/s —
Vocational Education & Training, International Education

Summary —

The recovery package announced by the Northern Territory Government will be aimed at keeping Territorians in jobs, stimulate the economy and provide some relief for businesses affected by the impact of COVID-19.

Key Issues —

As providers across the higher education, vocational education, training and skills sectors are impacted by the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus and measures taken to contain its spread, the Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia (ITECA) has been a strong advocate for the Northern Territory Government to introduce measures to support not only the independent tertiary education sector, but also the businesses that employ its students.  In this context the assistance package below is welcome.

Measures that directly benefit independent providers include a relief of payroll tax on wages for two years for those eligible businesses that employ a Territorian in the next 12 months. Organisations that receive government grants will be offered flexibility in the delivery of the agreed key performance indicators where the ability to meet these is impacted by COVID-19. In addition, organisations that have already received grants or sponsorships from the NT Government for events which have been cancelled or postponed will not be asked to repay the funding if it is already been committed.

The Northern Territory Government is also offering free and practical business advice through the Business Enterprise Centre and other organisations, including the NT Government.
