Amongst the plethora of fees and charges that the Australian Government is burdening independent Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) with is a levy to support students accessing VET Student Loans. Members of the Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia (ITECA) will be meeting with the Australian Government to discuss the implications for RTOs and their students.
Key Issues —
VET Student Loans is a loan scheme that assists eligible full fee-paying students studying an approved vocational education and training (VET) qualification to pay their tuition fees. To safeguard the fees of students in the event of a closure of an RTO, the fees are protected by the Tuition Protection Scheme (TPS) operated by the Australian Government.
To fund the extension of the TPS scheme to the VET Student Loans program, parliament passed the VET Student Loans (VSL Tuition Protection Levy) Act 2019 (Cth). This legislation imposes a levy on providers to fund the scheme.
To assist VET Student Loans providers understand how the levy is to be administered, the ITECA VET Student Loans Interest Group will discuss the matter at its meeting on 17 June 2020.
