Summary —

Independent tertiary skills training and higher education providers that support international students can guide the advice given by the Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia (ITECA) to the Australian Government’s Jobs and Skills Summit.

Key Issues —

The Australian Government will be convening its Jobs and Skills Summit over 1-2 September 2022 at Parliament House in Canberra. The Summit will bring together stakeholders including employers, business organisations and the tertiary education sector.

The Jobs and Skills Summit will guide the development of a white paper that will shape the future of the nation’s labour market with a view to increasing productivity, achieving a sustainable increase in real wages, improving employment opportunities to assist disadvantaged people into work and improving immigration settings.

The Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia (ITECA) has been involved in a number of discussions with the Australian Government leading up to the Summit, with these discussions to continue post-Summit to support the development of the white paper.

With the great advice and guidance of ITECA members, there are issues relevant to the international education sector, associated with the working arrangements for international students, that merit review.

The contribution of independent international education providers will be critical to the discussions at the summit as they support around 54% of all onshore international student enrolments, including 97% of onshore international skills training student enrolments.

“ITECA looks forward to working with the independent international education sector in putting to the Summit a considered approach on the working arrangements for international students that will help address the skills shortage,” said Troy Williams, ITECA Chief Executive.

The ITECA Jobs And Skills Summit Consultation is part of a broader consultation process that’s being driven by the membership, including the ITECA Board and the ITECA International Education Policy Committee. Their advice and guidance is critical to ITECA’s policy advocacy team which is respected by government as an authoritative assessment of policy advice.
